Black was a fan of the film Napoleon Dynamite and its director, Jared Hess, and the two met in Los Angeles to talk about working together. Black was drawn to Hess’ concept of a man of God secretly living a violent life through his love of Lucha libre wrestling. During filming, Black suffered an eye gash after diving out of the wrestling ring during a stunt. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was able to continue filming. The film was entirely shot in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Originally, director Jared Hess wanted Beck to create the soundtrack for the film. Beck agreed because he was a fan of Hess. However, because Paramount Pictures felt Beck’s style did not fit the film, composer Danny Elfman was brought in to replace him. Elfman then composed a full score, which he recorded in May 2006. However, only about two-thirds of Elfman’s score was used in the film (with one of the songs, Ramses Suite, appearing in the released soundtrack). Because so much of Elfman’s music was used in the film, Elfman’s representatives requested that Elfman be the only person credited with the score. Hess became aware of this and refused to allow the studio to remove Beck’s name from the credits.
