One year after the fact, Ciara‘s split from rapper Future is still a case of he said, she said. Chatting with HuffPost Live on Monday, July 13, Future said he called it quits with his fiancee at the time because — wait for it — “we grew apart.”

“Everybody already had their speculation on what happened. A lot of people said, ‘Man, he cheated.’ But our relationship had nothing to do with cheating. We grew apart,” he told HuffPost Live. “As a man, you want to make decisions for your family, and sometimes the lady doesn’t see what you see. I called [the engagement] off long before any cheating rumors came out. I was like, ‘This isn’t going to work out.'”

However, his former fiancee, 29, definitely saw things differently. As Us Weekly exclusively reported in August 2014, the “I’m Out” singer was the one to pull the plug on their relationship, just three months after welcoming their son, Future Zahir Wilburn. According to an insider, Ciara found out her man was cheating with his wardrobe consultant, Tyrina Lee, through the rumor mill and not from Future himself.

“She found out about the affair through multiple sources in recent weeks,” an insider told Us last summer. “There was clear evidence when she approached Future about the cheating. This was clearly not just a one-night thing.”

Future, on the other hand, told his bride-to-be that he wasn’t into the Hollywood hoopla and decided go his own way. “I was like, I don’t want a headline story as ‘Ciara’s husband.’ We were still living together when [we split] because we were best friends,” Future told HuffPost Live, adding that Ciara had already picked out her dress and taken bridal photos with their son in her gown. “I felt embarrassed for her.”

Since their split, Future — just like his ex — is putting the focus on their son, 14 months.

“I have four boys and a girl,” said the rapper, whose eldest son is 13. “It’s the best feeling in the world. They look at me and don’t know about [my career]. I still have to pick ’em up from school, feed ’em. When I get off the stage, they just know me as Dad. They don’t know me as Future.”
